The Spanish classes are developed following the same units and topics with all the students, but adding a certain level of complexity based on the grade level and age of the children. During this first quarter , every grade level was studying the unit " Myself and Others". This is related to personal information, greetings and expressions of courtesy. In addition to these contents, we integrate Academic Vocabulary and culture to collaborate and make connections between core curriculum and Spanish. In like manner, our kindergartners are learning to use one word to introduce their name, count objects until 10, favorite colors, say hello, good bye, and follow very basic commands.
In first grade, our students are more able to build a phrase to answer questions when being asked about their name , age, feelings, favorite color and daily needs such as drinking water or going to the restroom.
In second grade, our children are ready to build a short sentence to introduce their personal information such as name, age, favorite color (from a wider list) , ask questions when they need something like water, go out of the room, or a classroom object.
From third grade on, our students are ready to go on more complex sentence structure, their vocabulary is wider, and they are starting to make cultural connections. Therefore, this quarter, third grade was able to answer personal questions like favorite color, name, feelings, age, birth date, connections between solar system and days of the week in the target language , when being asking by the teacher.
Fourth grade is able to use the same vocabulary from third grade to exchange information with the teacher and among themselves. They can also locate Colombia and tell some facts about this country, and name some of the countries where Spanish is spoken.
In fifth grade, students are able to locate the three regions in which the American Continent is divided, name the South America countries and their capitals. They can also greet and use expressions of courtesy in unrehearsed situations, ask and answer questions among themselves.
